Taiping Houkui - Green Tea

Taiping Houkui is produced in the Houkeng area in Anhui province in China.

The largest sized leaf tea among the famous green teas shares the same production area with Huangshan Maofeng. It was created in 1900, and in 1915, it was awarded the golden medal in Panama World’s Fair. Ranked one of ten top brand teas in China, TaiPing KouKui has a fresh, orchid like fragrance with a classic sweet green tea taste.  When brewed it has a bright green color, that combine with the size of the leaves to make a tea that is great to admire in a tall clear glass.  This tea is not bitter in the least, and retains its sweet taste even after many infusions.

Unlike most the green teas, Taiping Houkui does not undergo any rolling process. It is dried at once using a series of bamboo baskets heated at various temperatures. Inactivation of enzyme as well as enhancement of flavour takes place during these unique processes and what makes this tea so distinctive, mellow and sweet.

If you are a green tea fan, you must try this, especially if you are not so fond of green teas in general because of their grassiness. You will find this one smooth and round with light, almond like, sweet roasted accents, a good vegetal body and the sweet flowery finish.
