This delightful purple clay tea pot would be ideal for brewing green tea, oolong tea, black tea and pu-erh tea.
Clay tea pots are considered by many to be the best vessel for brewing tea, due to the natural porosity. Due to it's high mineral content, the clay is often fired at 1200 degrees Celsius, which adds strength as the clay is solidified, resulting in a more durable product.
Purple clay retains heat extremely well, absorbs the flavors of the tea brewed in it, and over a period of time the pot is literally seasoned with the tea flavor. After many years you can brew a cup of good tea in a Yixing clay teapot simply by adding hot water. For this reason you should only brew one type of tea in the teapot, and have another pot for other teas.
It is important to season your new clay tea pot before using for the first time. This is a good way of cleaning the vessel without using soaps or detergents, which will dramatically affect the flavour of your tea.
How to season your new clay tea pot:
Step 1: Wash and scrub the new teapot thoroughly with clear, cold running water and a clean, non-abrasive sponge that has never had soap used with it. Clean out the inside thoroughly to remove any dust or fragments of clay. Do not use soap or cleaning products on the teapot.
Step 2: In a large saucepan, submerge the clay tea pot and lid in clean, filtered water. Allow enough space for the teapot and lid so that they are not crowded during the seasoning process. Gradually bring the water to a gentle boil, add a large pinch of your preferred tea to the saucepan and simmer for approximately 10 minutes, then turn off the heat.
Step 3: Cover with a lid and set aside to season. Allow approximately Eight hours for the seasoning process. Note that; due to the absorbent nature of clay, it is best to use the same type of tea to season, as the tea that will be used for steeping from that particular pot. The teapot will absorb the aroma of the tea it has been seasoned with.
Step 5: Allow the teapot to dry completely, preferably on a rack, ensuring there is sufficient air circulation around the pot. It is also important to keep the clay away from strong smelling objects, as the clay will absorb fragrances, especially when it is wet.
Step 6: Your pot is now ready to use. Remember to pour any left over tea over the pot and polish with a tea brush or dry, clean cloth. After each use, remove the tea and allow the pot to air out. Over time, it will produce better and better cups of tea and will acquire the rich sheen of matured seasoned Yixing clay.
